Maninder Kaur is one of the Founding Principals of Creative Designer Architects, a New Delhi-based architecture firm that has helmed notable projects of diverse typologies across Asia. With a comprehensive experience of designing spaces that foster health and wellness for over 30 years, Kaur has been responsible for ideating some of the most impressive healthcare facilities and hospitals in the country. Kaur believes that a good design can be instrumental in the recovery of an ailing person. Hence, she wants to instil the concept of designing with empathy, which makes healing spaces livelier and responsive. She talks about her work-life balance mantra, keeping fit and holistic wellness
Corporate Citizen: How do you set out your priorities to keep your work and personal life balanced?
Maninder Kaur: I believe a methodical organisation is key to maintaining a work-life balance. Planning is an essential part of my personal and professional life. I like to start my day early to get a few extra hours for myself and plan my day ahead of time. I also extend some of my work trips for a quick getaway that helps me.
CC: What helps the most in maintaining calm and peace despite an overload of work?
On days when I am occupied with work, looking at the bigger picture helps me get the perspective. I like to take regular breaks from work to unwind and devote the time to do things that I enjoy. I make sure I follow through with my morning yoga routine regularly and maintain a healthy diet.
CC: What keeps you fit and healthy? Any secrets that you can share?
Regular yoga practice in the mornings helps me remain fit. Listening to spiritual hymns is very relaxing for me and helps me keep calm.
CC: Your stress busters? How do you like to rejuvenate, recharge and de-stress?
I am very empathetic towards abandoned, stray animals. Feeding stray dogs is immensely fulfilling. At times, I also like to indulge in shopping therapy. It’s a stress-buster. On extremely busy days, I try and make a work-trip fun.
CC: Any tips that work the best for you to maintain a work-life balance?
Take up projects that you are passionate about. It makes work enjoyable.
It is important to understand and leverage your strengths to plan your work and work on your plan. Use technology to your advantage and make things easier for you.
Always consider being practical in all the aspects of your life.

CC: What can others learn from your learnings about keeping fit and on holistic wellness?
Like I mentioned earlier, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a work-life balance goes a long way. Take breaks from work to unwind and use every opportunity to make work enjoyable.
CC: Do you play any game which helps you in your work? How does it help? What are the lessons the game teaches for life?
I have enjoyed playing badminton. It laid the foundation for the importance of teamwork and resilience, which I carry into my everyday life - personally and professionally.

Nothing can substitute sheer hard work when it comes to being successful. The secret is to use the right strategy.
CC: What is your philosophy of work?
As an architect, it is extremely gratifying to know that I make a difference in the world. I am passionate about creating better spaces for people through my work. My philosophy is to challenge myself and push boundaries to deliver better designs with every project we undertake at CDA.
CC: Any word of advice for youngsters on management?
Know thyself. In the early days of your career, discover yourself and your strengths, and stay focused. Things will begin to fall in place. It is also important to take action and focus on getting things done.
