DUBAI The City of Opportunities
The futuristic city of Dubai is also a goldmine of opportunities that encourages cultural diversity. Jonathan P Cooper, Managing Director at Worldwide Insurance Solutions, Dubai, affirms this, as he shares what makes it a city to watch out for job hunters
Corporate Citizen: How did you prepare yourself to embrace a new work culture altogether?
Jonathan P Cooper: Before moving to the UAE, I had visited the region on many occasions and therefore had a good idea of what to expect. I had also worked out of a number of different markets for a multinational insurance company and was therefore, used to working in varying and diverse situations, and coming from London with its rich and diverse community meant that the transition to Dubai was a relatively straightforward one. Dubai is a very comfortable place to live and the diversity makes it an extremely interesting place to live and work. Of course, nothing can prepare one for the heat of the summer.
CC: How is the work culture in Dubai in various aspects?
As far as the pay package is concerned, the cost of living is like all the major cities since the cost of living is higher and therefore the same packages reflect that. Employee benefits again depends, but generally speaking, employers offer a good level of employee benefits that match the industry in which the role is offered so as to attract the right talent. Promotions like anywhere else, there are opportunities to progress and with the right employer, Dubai is a great place to grow professionally.
When it comes to gender equality, the government and businesses actively promote equality, this is a place to find equal opportunities for sure.
Weekends during the heat of the summertime is spent mostly indoors; most folk will go out to malls or coffee shops to avoid the heat, and those fortunate enough to have access to a swimming pool that is cooled, will enjoy the long summer days. During the winter, when the weather is extremely pleasant, there is much to do. Each life is great in Dubai but equally, there are a vast array of leisure and cultural attractions to enjoy and dune bashing is always a fun pastime.
Work from home is accepted in the current climate and many employers are certainly open to employees working from home, provided that this way of working is practical for the fits with the business.
When the question of the equation with superiors arises, I don’t think Dubai is any different to any other market. If you work hard and do a great job you’ll do fine with your superiors.
Dress code depends on the nature of the role. Many offices are smart casual, but of course, individuals in professional customer-facing roles will generally be “suited and booted”.
Appreciation of cultural diversity Dubai is a very diverse place with a progressive approach to the needs of its residents.

CC: What are some things about the Dubai culture that you really like? Did it exceed or not meet your expectations in any way?
Experiencing different cultures and backgrounds from the many different nationalities that live in town has been really fun experience. I also like the work ethic and the “work hard, play hard” attitude of the majority of people I have had the pleasure of working with.
CC: What challenges did you face in a new work culture?
Nothing that I can recall, at least not anything exceptional that one wouldn’t face anywhere in the world. Generally speaking, work culture is extremely positive in Dubai.
CC: What are the three pieces of advice you want to give someone who is looking to work in Dubai?
Look closely at the benefits you are being offered and the overall remuneration package, live as close to your office as possible to not waste time commuting and of course, pack your suntan lotion.
CC: What are some of the most leading areas for which Dubai is a hotspot when it comes to job opportunities?
Overall, given the proximity to India and the opportunities that exist in the modern and vibrant city of Dubai with its many leading companies and opportunities, especially given the significant Indian population, for any Indian looking to experience working overseas and developing their professional experience, Dubai is a natural choice. Come and enjoy! It also helps that Dubai has a very positive perception of Indians. They see them as committed, hardworking, passionate and enthusiastic.
