If there is one common ailment that afflicts young and old alike in today’s world, it must be frustration. Man continues to live a life of anger and frustration. Man seems to have lost his track. He has deliberately chosen a lifestyle which is least conducive to his own health and happiness. At work, there is the stress of meeting deadlines and unrealistic targets; there is professional rivalry and business competition; at home, there is impatience and irritation with loved ones. “Where has my laughter fled? Where are the dreams that we loved to dream? What has happened to me?” he asks himself, in utter bewilderment.

I often wonder when man will learn to live a life of serenity. When will he give up those ceaseless desires that drive him and haunt him, to begin a new phase on the journey of life? It is said that this world is a lake. The waters of which are rejuvenating. Man can live in the world and can work on his ‘self’ for growth and development. Man has to develop a yearning for the Lord. Doing his daily chores he should call out, “O Lord, make me anew. Make me peaceful. For, I am a peaceful soul.”

Let me ask each one of you: Are you happy with the way you live your life? Has the rat race left you with a sense of achievement and satisfaction? Do you get joy and contentment from gossip, interference in other people’s life and thoughtless bickering? Do you achieve anything by wasting your energies in utterly futile pursuits? Maybe, at the peak of frustration, you come to realise that your life has been wasted, that you have thrown away golden moments which could have been more productive, more constructive and better organised. Maybe, you would also realise that the things you are doing and the thoughts that you are sowing are not really worthwhile. And that you have knowingly or unknowingly, deliberately or unintentionally, committed many mistakes which have cost you – and others – dear.

God endowed each and every one of us with a free will, and each of us has the freedom to change our destiny at every step, in every round of life. At every step of life, we can make an effort to improve our condition. Through our actions, we can actually succeed in changing our own karma and thus change our own destiny.

“As a man thinketh, so he becomes,” is the immutable law of human nature. Fill your mind with thoughts of joy, love, peace and harmony – these aspects will be reflected in your life. Today in the modern world, we all lead “extremely busy lives”. “There’s no time!” is the repeated refrain we hear all around us. But then, we don’t seem to have any time for ourselves! Can I ask you how many of you meditate daily? Can I ask you how many of you sit in a silence corner and recite your favourite shloka or mantra daily? Can I ask you how many of you take time out to go for a walk?

Let us empower ourselves to make our lives more beautiful, more peaceful, more serene, more fulfilling! Let us cultivate greater awareness, so that we live in the present, and enjoy everything that we do – whether it is drinking tea, washing dishes, drawing up a strategy, planning a project, cooking, walking, talking or just sitting quietly.

True, human life is full of pain and suffering. But equally, it is also filled with many wonders and joys. Sunshine, laughter, music, the green grass, the company of our friends, the presence of our loved one – the list is endless.

If we are not happy, if we are not at peace with ourselves, we cannot share peace and joy with those around us. It is only when we begin to radiate peace and joy, that we spread positive vibrations around us.
