Confidence is Key
In love with the vertical of retail, Rohit Arya hopes to explore everything that this field has to offer in the coming years. He is a firm believer of the saying ‘retailing is detailing’. Although a few months old in this field, Rohit feels, “In retailing, attention to the smallest details can bring in noticeable and welcoming changes.” In conversation with Rohit…

When Rohit faced issues while learning about any subject, he tried harder instead of giving up. His resolve to understand the concept of the subjects got the best out of him. Although he lacked a tad bit in Math during his school days or Finance while completing his MBA, Rohit worked on figuring out the basics and what lies at the core of the subjects. “One cannot be a master in every subject. But we can work on getting better. Once you understand the core concept on which the subject is built, the going gets easy,” he assured. Further adding, “During school days, understanding Math was a bit of problem but I worked hard and once I got to know its basics, I did quite well. So much so that I would top the subject in High School. Same happened with Finance, I got better each day when I started putting in more efforts and revising the concepts.” Born in Pune, Rohit shifted to Mumbai where he completed his higher studies.
Fascination towards retailing
A good store manager is someone who attends to the consumer’s needs and gives them a shopping experience of their lifetime. And for a store manager, there is no feeling better than seeing a content consumer after their shopping at a store. Agreed Rohit, “One of the reasons why I chose the field of retailing is because I would get to see the customer behaviour instantly. Retailing mostly revolves around its consumers. You serve them, you solve their queries… And in turn, you become a part of their lives. All this can be learnt once you are on the field and in front of them. There’s no way this can be learnt sitting in a classroom or in the office. You have to be on your feet in the store to understand their behaviour. A satisfied consumer boosts the team’s morale, indirectly increasing the sales of the store.”
Talking about his affection towards retailing, Rohit said, “It was during my management studies when I fell in love with the concept of retailing. That’s when I decided to carry forward this passion. Fortunately, our college had the best visiting faculty for this subject, who took efforts to make the topic interesting and interactive.” After completing his graduation. Rohit decided to pursue an MBA in Marketing from a renowned business school in Pune.
Retailing as a sector does not attract a lot of people. But for Rohit, it had become his passion. There were several hindrances when he decided to pick this field but he chose to stick to his perception. He said, “A lot of people opposed me when I thought of entering the realm of retailing. Leading to them not supporting me in my endeavour. But I was adamant on my decision and resolute. I fought my own battles and I am happy that I chose retailing.”
“I am up for the game and will do whatever it takes to carry out my responsibilities. Each day brings in new costumers, different challenges but it also brings in hope and happiness”

A healthy discussion
The placement season brought in a jolt of excitement and happiness, precisely because, Rohit would get a chance to implement his acquired knowledge of retailing. When it came to the personal interview, confidence was the key for Rohit. Informing more about his placement, he said, “Before getting through Max Fashion, I had given two more interviews that day. For me, confidence takes the driver’s seat when it comes to personal interviews. And for group discussion, I brushed up on the current affair. Frankly, I was never nervous during the placement season, as I knew being frantic wouldn’t yield anything for me. Hence, I kept my calm and hoped for the best.”
It is obvious for a student to be anxious during his or her placement. And especially during the personal interviews, students tend to lose their calm. But what Rohit advised is, “Instead of worrying about the interview, spend time in preparing for it. Don’t be nervous or afraid, it’s not the end of the world. Decide what field you are looking for and understand it’s concepts thoroughly.” Further adding, “Agreed, personal interviews can be startling. But learn to look beyond it-beyond fear lies triumph. Every company has its vision and mission statement written on their website. Go through it and incorporate it during the personal interview. PIs should have more of healthy discussion. Have a healthy conversation during the interview rather than talking about the obvious.”
Challenging yet exciting
Rohit’s journey in the field of retailing began when he got placed with Max Fashion, Baroda, Gujarat, as a management trainee. A few months into it and still he cannot contain his happiness as his job never ceases to amaze him. “Of course, the role is challenging, the work can be strenuous at times, but the outcome is something that can never be measured. I get to see the consumer’s reaction in a jiffy, I get to assist them, and in doing so, I am privileged of getting this opportunity of being a part of their lives.”
Talking about his role at the store, he said, “I have to look after the smooth functioning of the store. It includes the store operations, attending to the consumer’s needs, looking after the sales, shipping, inventory and much more. It does sound tedious yet it is exciting to another level.”
Dreaming big
Within a few days, Rohit will be promoted to the assistant store manager. And he cannot wait to carry forward his duties. “Days are long and there are chances that I might not even get a day off. But I am up for the game and will do whatever it takes to carry out my responsibilities. Each day brings in new costumers, different challenges but it also brings in hope and happiness,” he said.
Rohit believes in working on a short-term goal. And currently his aim to understand the concept of retailing even deeper. “Now that I am getting to apply the knowledge that I have gathered so far, I wish to know more what retailing has to offer. I want to know every minute detail that goes into retailing. And I cannot wait to see what’s in store for me,” he signed off.
