Driven by values & aiming for the stars
Result-driven people are the ones who always see the light at the end of the tunnel. That’s the same light that fuels their momentum to reach their goal, enjoy the success at that moment and then move on to a new goal. Soumodarshi Gorai is a perfect example of how being result-oriented can do wonders in one’s life. He aims for the star and plots a plan to achieve it. Even though that path is laid with hardships, he learns from them and prepares a better plan. In a tête-à-tête with Corporate Citizen, Soumodarshi, who is currently working with TIBCO Software Inc. as senior solution analyst spoke at length about his journey in the corporate world, the upshots of working hard and how asking yourself a simple question ‘why’, would change your perception of achieving your goal
great role in shaping Soumodarshi’s career
Once your heart knows what you want, your mind will do everything in its control to let you achieve your goal. Soumodarshi understood this concept of life when he couldn’t make it through several targets in his life. But what he took away from the adversity is mind full of virtues and pocket still filled with dreams. Born and raised in a small town of Asansol in West Bengal, Soumodarshi encompasses in himself the modesty to recognise his boundaries and integrity and charm to achieve what his mind and heart want. “When a person is result-driven, the path to acquire your goal becomes pretty clear. Otherwise, lack of clarity creates chaos and frustration which can hamper your progress. Only through failures and missed attempts, one can gain clarity in thoughts and conviction in the mind,” expressed Soumodarshi.
A strong base
He finished most of his education in his hometown. While pursuing his BTech in Electrical and Communication from West Bengal University, he realised that honing an MBA degree will help him in rounding off his skills to enter the corporate arena. That’s when he decided to join a renowned business school. “I felt like a small fish in a big ocean when I moved to Pune. It was a different place and the diversity in the college exposed me to several cultures,” he said.
Whilst completing his degree systems from his college, he apprehended the worth of discipline and determination. Talking about his college life, he said, “Garnering education from this esteemed college made the transition from college to corporate life quite simple. The values they preached in a holistic approach simplified my thoughts. Agreed, they did have some stringent rules and packed schedules but it did benefit me in the long run. In short, they made me corporate-ready!”, he adds.
When I got placed my salary wasn’t great. But instead of chasing the money, I decided to follow my heart and focused on grabbing my desired role in the organisation. Once you achieve the role you were looking for, work harder and try to ace it
Standing out of the crowd
When it comes to the most basic decisions in life, it is acceptable to stick with what most people say. However, it comes to some of the pivotal topics and especially your career, one needs to go against the herd. This is one of Soumodarshi’s theory that bagged him good scores in the placement’s group discussion round. He explained, “For me, it was always easy to crack the CV and personal interview round. However, I struggled during the GDs. After a few failed attempts, I decoded the theory of going against the herd to stand out of the crowd. It easily grabs the invigilators attention and you get the chance to put forth your opinion in a different way,” he said.
The game-changer
After getting placed with Datamatics, Mumbai, Soumodarshi wasn’t keen on sticking to the marketing department as his interest lied in business analysis. “What I am today is because of my decision to shift from marketing to business analysis. The shift made a world of difference in my career and personality.” And the reason he achieved his desired role was merely because he put his heart and soul in achieving it. “When I got placed my salary wasn’t that great. But instead of chasing the money, I decided to follow my heart and focused on grabbing my desired role in the organisation. Once you achieve the role you were looking for, work harder and try to ace it,” he said.
From being a pre-sales executive with Datamatics Global Services Ltd, to working as a technical pre-sales executive with Trigyn Technologies Ltd, to serving as a bid support consultant and proposal manager at Capgemini Technology Services India Ltd, to currently working as solution analyst with TIBCO Software Inc, Soumodarshi has come a long way and has grown leaps and bounds. Talking about the learnings from the corporate world, he said, “Never give up on your values. Stick to them no matter what. Don’t stop chasing your goals even if you fall down. Get up, be stronger than ever and grab what is yours. Also, there is no substitute for hard work,” he emphasised.

The role-model theory
A quick learner and an excellent observer, Soumodarshi picked up the habit of noticing the traits of his seniors, peers and managers which led to their success. “Having a role model at work can do wonders. Positive and successful people influence your actions and motivate you to uncover your true potential. They knowingly or unknowingly teach you several lessons in life which can have a great impact on you,” he adds.
One such role model that Soumodarshi adores is Kunal Aman. Talking about him, he said, “He was one of my first managers. The way he communicated with his colleagues and seniors was simply immaculate. Watching him work and learning from him has brought out the best in me,” he adds.
The power of ‘why’
When you begin your journey to attain your goal, the ‘how’ and ‘what’ element of it is easily accomplished. One knows what they want and how they would want to achieve it. However, what lies in the centre of the framework is the golden question, ‘why’. Why does one want to achieve their stipulated goal? However, only a few can answer their whys – the purpose of their goal. Soumodarshi firmly believes in the power of ‘why’, a theory proposed by Simon Sinek, a British-American author, motivational speaker and organisational consultant. “The articulation of why defines the soul of your target. Once you understand your aspirations, the reasoning of ‘why’ element would show you a crystal-clear path. When you have a firm belief and you know why you want to achieve the goal, it’s only then things start to fall in place. Just ask yourself ‘why’ and see the change in your perception,” he explained.
